To say that Australia is a land of extremes would be an understatement. From the island of Tasmania that sits between 40o and 44o latitude South to Cape York at the far Northern tip in the tropics, from the deserts of the ‘Red Centre’ to the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia really does have it all.
Arguably, for me anyway, the best place in Australia for adventure fishing is in the Kimberley region of West Australia. With the area being so isolated due to its immense river systems, rough roads and, although none of the mountains reach even 1,000 metres (3,281 ft), there is so much steep land that it makes much of the region very difficult to negotiate.
But there is an up side to the difficulties presented by the isolation, such as the share numbers and size of the fish!
Now, I must point out that I myself have never been to the Kimberley’s as I suffer badly from a persistent and unrelenting back injury. I am, however, in love with the area and more specifically in love with the fishing in the Kimberley’s. How can this be possible you ask?
Well, thanks to Jase & Rodo, a couple of Aussie Blokes who really are modern day adventurers; I feel that I’ve been there!
Jason Andrews and Rodney Quinton are living the dream. These two guys are either completely mad or unbelievably lucky! After watching their first DVD, I was hooked (no pun intended).
The thing about their DVD’s is that they are raw – what you see is exactly what happened – no camera crew, no production team and no script and as far as I can tell there is barley a plan! Like I said, they are completely mad or unbelievably lucky!
I came across a video trailer of their first DVD on YouTube and from there I became a fan!

What it doesn’t say is the distance travelled just to get there. In the DVD they explain that they are from Noosa in South East Queensland and travel some 5000 km (3106 miles) covering 2 states and 1 territory just to go fishing – that’s keen!
As I write this article, I am assuming that they are back from the Kimberley’s because it is now considered the wet season. It would be quite literally impossible to get to the place they went due to the fact that some of the roads and certainly most of the tracks they travelled will be under water! I think my next article might be about the wet. It is amazing how a place so dry can get so flooded so quickly and this happens every year – the animals and plants count on it! But anyway, that’s another story.

Diving the Poor Knight Islands
At seven o’clock in the morning I woke up and went to have breakfast. The weather didn’t look too promising, but we didn’t let that stop us. There were dark clouds overhead and it was raining, but who cares about raining when you are underwater! Everyone else was up so daddy, Felix and I started to prepare for the trip that was to come. Once we had our swimmers on we packed the backpack with everything we would need that day. We each brought our cameras and my dad packed some chocolate.
We drove out of the hotel and directly to the Dive Tutukaka shop. When we arrived we filled out some forms and then they suited us up with, 3 wetsuits, gloves, boots, flippers and a hood. Once we had all the equipment we needed, we walked across the road to the marina where the 80 foot Perfect Day dive and cruise boat awaited us. There were 24 other people on the boat but not all of them were diving. Some of them were snorkeling and some of them were just there for the cruise.
Craig, the captain aboard the boat gave us a safety briefing of the boat and introduced us to the crew. It was long 45 minute ride out to the islands pounding against the huge swell all the way. On the way there, we got to know our dive master Evan. Once we were inside a protected bay Craig stopped the boat. It took the crew about five minutes to anchor the boat on all sides before the boat was secure. Then Craig came up stairs to give us a site briefing.
The dive site was called Magic Wall because when the depth dropped from six to fifteen meters, the wall was home to a variety of fish and sponges. He explained some of the marine life that we could see there and when he finished he told all of the divers to go downstairs to get ready. Because I had three wetsuits they were pretty hard to get on. It took us at least ten minutes to get completed suited up and another three minutes in the water to check our buoyancy. And finally when we were all set and ready to go, we went down.
It was a shallow dive site, the max depth being only fifteen meters, but Evan said we would be able to see everything just fine from twelve meters. We slowly went along the “Magic” wall and Evan showed us everything he saw. He pointed out some moray eels, nudibranchs, and I spotted a short tailed stingray in the distance. We also saw a couple scorpionfish camouflaged in the rocks. The water was the perfect temperature for kelp and it thrived along the sea floor. If you got low enough you wouldn’t be able to see anything through the thick kelp. We stayed underwater for 45 minutes and then we surfaced. I still had 120 bar left when we surfaced. When I was back onboard I took my wetsuits off and had a hot shower. Then, once everybody was back on board the vessel we started to move again. He told us that we would take a little cruise to the next dive location while we warmed up. He told us a little bit about the history of the Poor Knight Islands and took us to some of the historic sites. On the cruise, we went through the biggest arch in the southern hemisphere and into the largest sea cave in the world. It took us 40 minutes before we arrived at the next dive site and again he gave us a site briefing. This spot was called Blue MaoMao Cave and from where we were anchored you could clearly see the cave. Again, I suited up in my three wetsuits and my BCD before I jumped into the chilly water with my brother, daddy and Evan. Evan checked all of us before we went down to the rocky bottom. He led us under a boulder and into the cave. There were millions of Blue MaoMao! As we slowly swam through the giant cloud of fish they separated from each other and ran away. We swam along the cave wall and Eric showed us more interesting creatures and objects. He found us a few more nudibranchs and pointed out some neat sponges. We stayed underwater for another 45 minutes before we surfaced for the last time. We lifted ourselves and our heavy suits aboard the boat and then took of our suits to have a nice hot shower. After everybody was settled, Craig alerted us that we were going to head back to Tutukaka. I had another cup of hot soup and we talked with some of the other divers about the amazing experience he had shared as we cruised on back to Tutukaka.

If you plan to snorkel often, you may consider purchasing your own mask and if you wear prescription glasses, you can have a mask made with your prescription.

These vests come in varying sizes (youth to adult) with the inflatable side worn in the front and the strap on the back and coming up through the crotch. Most tours will not let your snorkel without a vest, but it is a good practice to wear one when snorkeling far off shore.
No snorkeling excursion would be complete without the pictures of you and your family enjoying themselves in the blue waters, and swimming among the brightly colored fish. Be sure to take pictures of the brightly colored fish, as there will be many to see in the Bahamas.
And don’t forget the sun screen; you will be snorkeling face down in the water exposing your back to the bright sun. It takes minutes to get sunburned in the Caribbean sun, not to mention the silly pattern the straps make on your back.

Shoreline fishing can be very productive in the Chesapeake Bay. Depending on the season, location and species targeted, anglers may fish with one or several types of cut baits, live baits or with artificial lures. An enchanted underwater world
A Pristine string of rugged coral isles, ringed by rainbow coral reefs the reserve offers living coral gardens, sculpted coves, wheeling seabirds, rare turtles, magical dugongs and an underwater world of unbelievable color, discovery and vibrancy. The Reserve is part of Lamu archipelago, a cluster of hot low-lying desert islands that run for some 60km parallel to the coastline of Northern Kenya. The last survivor of one thousand year-old civilization, Lamu was founded by the Arabs in the seventh century and traded for centuries thereafter in ivory, rhino horn and slaves. Today it offers a unique showcase for traditional Swahili culture, a bustling historical town with some of the most pristine beaches in Africa.
The Kiunga Marine National Reserve is made up of a chain of 51 coral islands lying some 2 km offshore of the fringing reef. They run adjacent to the mainland Dodori and Boni National Reserves. Varying in size, the islands are composed of old, eroded coral and shelter lesser kudu, bushbuck, monkey, porcupine and wild pig.
Reefs, the rainforest of the sea
Coral reefs are one of the most fascinating ecosystems on earth, sheltering nearly one million different types of marine life. Forming only in warm seas, corals are made by battalions of tiny polyps, miniscule sea anemone-like creatures that live together in colonies, some create a hard skeleton outside their bodies which eventually forms into stony coral. Corals come in many shapes, sizes and colours including the open-branched stag shorn coral, the pincushion-like acropora coral, the wavy-branched plate-like pavona coral, the massively solid favia coral and the convoluted brain coral.

Diving and Snorkeling paradise
Thw best time for snorkeling over the reefs is two hours either side of low tide, which is the time when the greatest amount of marine life is revealed. Kenyas coastal waters are warm all year round so diving without a wet suit is also rewarding.
What To See
A shifting rainbow of small fish, worms, shrimps, octopus and clams hide in the gaps while blue and yellow parrot fish use their hard beaks to chew off lumps of coral. Snappers, zebra fish, butterfly fish and scorpion-fish shimmer in the clear waters while sharks, rays, turtles and starfish prowl the reef in search of prey. Fierce moray eels hide in holes, while small crabs, wrasses(long, spiny-finned fish) and sharks lurk in the caves, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, brittle stars and numerous species of mollusk feed on algae and transparent prawns dance through the waters alongside shifting clouds of tiny demoiselle fish. The Reserves creeks and inlets also serve as a substantial breeding ground for the rare mermaid-like creature called the dugong. A completely aquatic, warm-blooded mammal, the dugong is thought to share a common ancestry with the elephant, dugong have an average length of 2.5-3.2 meters, may weigh anything from 140-170kg, and live on the marine grasses growing in the shallower waters of the Reserve.
The outer islands of the Reserve host many seabirds. Species nesting here include roseate tern, sooty gull, white-cheeked tern, bridled tern and brown node. Crab plovers are also plentiful while other migrant waders frequent the more sheltered flats and creeks.
Where To Stay
Kiwayu Island is the only inhabited island to be included in the Kiunga Marine National Reserve.
